Band Together: Five Ways to Improve Poor Team Culture

Team culture is crucial in any workplace. It defines your ability to work together, collaborate, communicate and it’s indicative of employee satisfaction and their likelihood to stay with the company. If you have employees who aren’t happy at work, they’re much more likely to seek employment elsewhere, in a place where they can be happier. Here are five ways to improve team culture.

Hold People Accountable

If someone isn’t doing everything they’re expected to do, you have to let them know as soon as you can. When those people think it’s acceptable to do a mediocre job or skip out on certain responsibilities, that will become the status quo and you’ll have a really hard time getting them to improve when you finally ask them to. And get rid of people who aren’t doing their jobs well at all as soon as you can. If you let things slide or look the other way on non-performers, people who are doing their jobs well will start to resent you.

Schedule Regular Check-Ins

Of course, annual performance reviews are essential, but you need to touch base with your team more frequently than that. Schedule meetings with each individual somewhere between every week and every month to see how they’re doing, find out what they need help with, and offer them the chance for feedback. Your employees will feel valued and respected and you might come across some really great innovative ideas in the process.

Prioritize Individual Growth

After your annual performance reviews, set goals with each individual employee. Find out where they want their careers to go and do everything you can to help them get there. If you have the means, sponsor workshops and conferences, offer tuition reimbursement and encourage them to check out relevant books, podcasts, and seminars. You want your team to feel valued and supported and challenged.

Sell Your Vision

Set both short-term and long-term goals for your team and celebrate with them when they achieve them. You want everyone to know where you’re headed and how each of their daily tasks and responsibilities fit into that vision. Without vision, their actions seem random and meaningless with no sense of purpose.

Adhere to Expectations

No surprises. If your employees expect your team meetings to only last an hour, start them on time and make sure they only last an hour. Respect their time, be consistent, and make sure everyone abides by the same rules—including you. Set the right example because your employees are watching and will follow your lead.
