Improving Your Virtual Interview

Don’t SLACK! Your virtual interview is just as important as an in-person interview

Do you have an upcoming video interview? You may be wondering how to prepare! Even though you’ll be taking the interview from the comfort of your own home, it’s not a reason to show up in your pajamas or on your front porch. Remember that even though a video interview may feel more informal than an in-person interview, it’s still a professional meeting you should take seriously. After all—you want to make a good impression!

Six Ways to Prepare for Your Video Interview

As the interview day approaches, you’ll still want to practice answers to common interview questions, research the company, and choose your outfit. Beyond that, you’ll want to consider a few other things from one of the leading job placement agencies in Murfreesboro TNWood Personnel:

Make Sure Your Technology Works

If you’ll be interviewing from your computer, be sure your camera is enabled and your device is powered up. The same holds true if you plan to use your smart phone.

Find a Clean, Quiet Interview Place

Remember—your interviewer can see your surroundings during a virtual call. So, be sure to pick up any clutter and pay attention to your backdrop. Choose a room where you can shut the door to avoid interruptions from children, roommates or pets.

Pay Attention to Body Language

Just like talking face-to-face, an interviewer can see your body language through video. You’ll want to maintain eye contact, minimize fidgeting and use open and positive gestures, just as you would in person.

Grab a Glass of Water

Just leave it on your desk in case you need it. Sipping water can help you calm your nerves and avoid dry mouth, which can happen if you’re nervous.

Be Ready to Jot Down Notes

A pad of paper and a pen are good things to have next to you if you want to write down some of what the interviewer mentions. Plus, you can have a list of questions ready to be sure everything you want to know is answered.

Send a Copy of Your Resume by Email

You won’t be able to share a printed copy of your resume, which is standard during interviews. So, during a virtual interview, just gather the interviewer’s email and send an electronic copy of your resume for a reference during the call.

Don’t Forget to Follow Up

This is standard in any interview. Simply send a follow-up email thanking the person for their time, reiterating your interest in the position, and stating why you think you’d be a good fit.
