Making the Right Firm Impression

Mastering the Interview: Making the Right Impression

If you’re preparing for a job interview, congratulations! You want to take all the steps possible to do your best. Whether you’ll be interviewing virtually or in person, you may be wondering how to make a good impression at a job interview. Just follow these tips from a leading provider of job openings in Nashville, TN.

How to Impress at a Job Interview

If you’ll be interviewing virtually, you can take these steps to make a lasting and positive first impression:

  • Do your research. You’ll be on top of what the company is all about and know more about what questions you’d like to ask. And remember—it’s always a good idea to ask questions. Check out their website, press releases, social media pages and local business journal. The more you know, the more you’ll be ready to impress.
  • Make sure your technology is ready. Nothing is more stressful than trying to log into a Zoom call and not knowing where to click or how to turn on the video and audio. As soon as you get the link for the interview, click in and make sure everything works right. If not, reach out ASAP with questions. On the day of the interview, have your computer or tablet powered up, and sign in a few minutes early. Have a power source nearby, just in case.
  • Find a spot for peace and quiet. Find an area of your home where you can take the interview without distractions. Let your family and roommates know you’ll need a little time for your interview, and to keep noise to a minimum.
  • Dress the part. This includes a full outfit—it will help you to be focused and in a professional mindset. Plus, you’ll avoid any embarrassing situations by dressing up on top, but wearing sweatpants on your lower half.

If your interview will be in person, you can follow these tips to do your best:

  • Be on time. Map out your route ahead of time and plan to arrive 15-30 minutes early. Take your wait time to run through interview answers, breathe and calm your nerves.
  • Bring copies of your resume. You can store these in a briefcase or padfolio to keep them wrinkle-free.
  • Dress for success. Your best bet is a professional outfit, even if the company culture is casual. Keep fragrance and jewelry to a minimum. Make sure your shoes are clean and in good condition, and your outfit is clean and ironed.
  • Remember pandemic precautions. Wear a mask. Don’t worry about shaking hands, but instead wave your greeting.
  • Practice positive body language. The interviewer can’t see a portion of your face (due to your mask), but you can convey positive body language through your eyes and movements. Lean forward, nod, and smile with your eyes.
