Tips on Choosing a Career Path | Wood Personnel Services

How to choose a career path when you’re not sure where you want to be in 1-3 years

If you’re on the fence about your career future, a temp job might be a good choice for you. If the phrase “temp job” strikes fear into your heart, you might be surprised to learn that any negative stigma surrounding temp work isn’t accurate. Temp jobs provide many advantages to your career, especially if you’re not sure what you want to do long-term.

Get valuable experience

Have an industry or two in mind, but not sure if you’re ready to commit? Temp assignments are just that—temporary—so you can get a feel for a certain line of work without a long-term commitment. If you don’t like it: no problem. When your assignment ends, you can leave and not look back. But if you end up liking the job—great! You’ll understand more about what you might want to do, and some companies even extend offers of full-time, permanent work to temp employees who do a good job.

Gain entry into a top company

Let’s say you’re not sure what you want to do, but you have an idea of where you’d like your career to be. With temp work, you could get your foot in the door at a top company. Then, you can evaluate if it’s truly where you might like to work. And by getting some experience and meeting people who work there, who knows? You might be able to get hired permanently, learn on the job, work your way up to where you’d like to be long-term… the possibilities are endless.

Build your resume

An empty resume won’t get you very far in your career. But with temp experiences, you can build up content as you learn new things and gain more and more work experience. What you learn on a temp assignment could help pave the way for a future job… all you need to do is get started with that first stepping-stone.

Meet people

Temp work gives you a chance to network with professionals in the working world. Even if you work a job that’s not for you, meeting people and building your professional network is a great way to learn about other job openings that could come up down the road. It never hurts to know people.

Are you ready?

Being unsure of what you want to do with your career is okay, and many people experience this feeling. But you can get started today by talking to a recruiter about a temp position. To learn more about openings, visit the job search page of Wood Personnel. We can’t wait to meet you!
