How to be More Appealing to Potential Employers | Wood Personnel

Is It Time to Revitalize and Relaunch Your Career?

The past few years have been tough on all of us. You may have found yourself with a major shift in how you were able to perform your job due to shifting restrictions. Some found themselves working fully remote, while others found themselves at work with process changes to allow for health and safety. And many others experienced layoffs and furloughs while the world adjusted.

During this time, we were able to take a step back from the rush and hustle of normal daily life and re-evaluate. Is this really what I want to do? What else could I be doing with my career? What’s next for me?

You may have found yourself happy with where you are and eager to return back to the office as conditions settled and policies changed once again. Or you may have found yourself among the current population who has decided to change jobs or leave the workforce altogether.

So Is It Time for a Career Change?

It All Comes Down to Values and Goals

When it’s time to consider a change in your life, it’s a good idea to examine your values and the underlying reasons why you do what you do. What’s your “why”? Your values help determine your main motivators in life, and when you think about them, they can help steer you in the direction of your next career move—even if that means staying right where you are. Once you understand your values, you can use them to build goals. This way, you’ll have a more clear idea of where you want to go with your career.

Examples of Value-Based Goals

Not sure where to get started writing your goals? It just takes a little thought. For example, if your value is spending time with family, then your goal could be: “I want a job that allows me to spend time with my family, which makes me feel fulfilled.” By adding an emotion to your goal, it helps to more fully understand it in your mind. If you can, adding a timeframe to your goals is also helpful. For example, if your value is financial stability, then your goal could be: “I will increase my pay by $10,000 a year within the next 12 months, which gives me peace of mind.”

Get Yourself Ready for a Change

If you’ve reviewed your values and goals, and decided it’s time for a change, you’ll want to get into the right mindset. Simply remind yourself that change can be scary, but it takes time to find something new and get used to it. Allow yourself the space to be new at something as you learn. Keep an open mind. Be patient and trust that good things are about to happen!
